How to Find Historical Attractions to Visit in Your Area

No matter where you live, you can find historical attractions in your area.  Even if you don’t live in a “major” city like New York or Los Angeles, and even if you think of your area as too new to have a “history,” you can still find great historical attractions to visit.  All you really need is time and a library card.  Here are some tips to finding these sorts of sites in your area.

Get a Book on the History of Your Area

Even if you have never seen your town’s name in a history book and if no major battles or wars have taken place nearby, you can still find great, significant historical attractions near where you live.  There simply is no such thing as a place that has “no history.”

Every state in the Union has books written about its statehood.  Make a trip to your local library and check one out.  You will soon find several nearby locales where significant historical events happened.  Most such sites will have some sort of a monument, even if it is only a plaque.

Your town library is also likely to have a history of the town where you live—usually commissioned by the town’s historical society and written by a resident with long family ties to the town.  Such histories will often point you to interesting details like the origin of your town’s name and the first residents of your area.

Expand your Definition of “History”

One of the main reasons why people don’t think the places where they live have any history is because they subscribe to the wrong-headed notion that history always involves presidents and wars.  However, much of history is not about the famous but the struggles of people whose name history has forgotten.

For example, every place in America was once part of Native American societies.  If you just poll your average citizen without school age children, you will find that the vast majority of them really have no idea what native tribes walked the same grounds they currently have their homes and businesses on.  Although much of this history is only remembered in recorded folktales, it is also a rich part of our American tradition.

As you research your area, you should look for the name of the tribe that once occupied your grounds.  You will probably find that they still have some sort of a historical memorial where you may even be able to see how the people who once occupied your hometown lived before the Europeans came.

Also, don’t forget that writers and artists are also part of history.  If you had a famous writer associated with your area, you will probably find that their local homes may be part of historic preservation sites.

Historical Societies

Most towns and cities will have at least one historical society where other history lovers congregate.  If you contact your local historical society, you will find that they will often have events where they invite local historians to speak about subjects related to your area.  They may also organize visits to local sites.  These societies are largely run on the time and effort of volunteers.

Don’t Forget Recent History

You may not think of an event that happened in your lifetime as historical, but of course, history is always adding to itself.  If an event happened in your area, it might be interesting to visit the spot of that event as you learn about it.  Often with more recent events, the majority of the structures still remain intact.

Natural History is Still History

Although many of us don’t think of forests as historical attractions, they often are some of the best.  Visiting a National Park, you will often find plaques and memorials to those adventurers that first explored the area.  Visiting such a location can also be fun because you get to enjoy the outdoors even as you learn about our past.

Visiting historical sites is great thing to do with the whole family.  Although most kids claim not to like history, they will often find visiting a historical site enjoyable, and many families will often treasure the memories of such excursion later on in life.  At the very least, it is quality time spent together.
